Membership

Become part of a global community of more than 2,600 vetted investigative journalists in 94 countries. Membership connects you to cross-border collaborations, legal and digital protection, funding, training and colleagues you can trust — wherever the story leads.

Why join

What membership gives you

Investigative reporting is expensive, technical and increasingly dangerous. Membership puts the infrastructure, protection and network of an established international association behind your work.

Cross-border collaboration

Join coordinated investigations with reporters in other countries — sharing documents, verifying findings and publishing together across dozens of languages.

§

Legal defence & the emergency fund

Pre-publication review and an emergency legal fund stand behind members facing lawsuits, SLAPP suits and intimidation.

🔒

Digital-security training & rapid response

Hands-on training, secure tools and a 24/7 rapid-response line protect you and your sources when something goes wrong.

Fellowships & grants

Members are eligible for reporting grants and fellowships — part of more than $4.2m awarded to independent investigations to date.

The member directory

A verified listing among vetted colleagues, fixers and specialists — so editors and collaborators can find you, and you can find them.

Discounted Summit access

Reduced registration and travel bursaries for the annual IAOIJ Global Investigative Summit and regional workshops throughout the year.

Republishing partnerships

Reach new audiences through our network of 180+ partner newsrooms, with editorial and translation support for cross-border republication.

Peer support & mentoring

Regional channels, a mentoring programme and a peer-review network connect you to reporters who have done this work before.

Membership tiers

Choose the membership that fits

Who can join

Eligibility & vetting

IAOIJ membership is open to journalists and newsrooms anywhere in the world who do investigative work in the public interest and commit to our ethical standards. We welcome reporters, editors, data journalists, documentary makers, fact-checkers and researchers — freelance or on staff, full-time or part-time.

Because members gain access to collaborations, sensitive material and one another's contact details, every application is verified by the Secretariat. We do not sell listings and we are not a directory of publicists or communications professionals — only working investigative journalists appear in the network.

Students and journalists in their first three years are welcome as Associate members; established professionals join as Full members; and organisations join at the Newsroom tier. Compare the tiers →

Questions

Membership FAQ

Who is eligible to join?

Any journalist or newsroom doing investigative work in the public interest — reporters, editors, data journalists, documentary makers, fact-checkers and researchers, freelance or on staff. Students and journalists in their first three years join as Associates.

How much does membership cost?

Associate membership is free; Full membership is €90 a year; Newsroom membership is €750 a year for up to 15 seats. Fee waivers are available for reporters under threat or in low-income regions.

I can't safely appear in a public directory. Can I still join?

Yes. You can request a confidential, unlisted membership — fully vetted and entitled to every member benefit, but never shown in the public directory. Note it in your application or contact the Secretariat.

How long does verification take?

Most applications are reviewed within two to three weeks. We may ask a follow-up question or contact your referees, and we'll keep you posted at each stage.

Do I need to be a full-time journalist?

No. Freelancers and part-time reporters are welcome. What matters is a genuine body of published investigative work and a commitment to the Code of Ethics — not a staff contract.

Can my whole newsroom join at once?

Yes — the Newsroom tier covers up to 15 named seats, an organisational profile and republishing partnerships. Larger organisations can arrange additional seats with the Secretariat.

Still have a question? Write to membership@iaoij.com.
