Terms of Use

The terms on which we make this website and our services available to you. Please read them before you use the site.

Last updated: June 2026

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of iaoij.com and the related services of the International Association of Investigative Journalism (“IAOIJ”, “we”, “us”). By using the site you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

1. Acceptance of these terms

By accessing, browsing or otherwise using this website, you confirm that you have read, understood and agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy. If you use the site on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you have authority to bind that organisation. These Terms apply to all visitors, members and users of the site.

2. About this site

This site is published by the IAOIJ, a non-profit association headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It provides information about the Association, our investigations, membership, resources and events. We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the site at any time, and we do not guarantee that it will always be available or error-free.

3. Use of content & republishing

Much of the IAOIJ’s journalism is produced to be shared. Many of our investigations are made available to partner newsrooms and, in some cases, to the public under a Creative Commons licence — typically requiring attribution and non-commercial use, and marked as such on the relevant article. Where a piece is offered under such a licence, you may republish it in line with that licence’s terms, which usually means: credit the IAOIJ and the named reporters, link back to the original, do not edit it so as to change its meaning, and do not imply we endorse you.

Not everything on the site is openly licensed. Photographs, datasets, logos, and third-party material may be subject to separate rights and are not covered by any Creative Commons notice. If a licence is not clearly stated, please ask us before republishing. When in doubt, treat content as all-rights-reserved.

4. Intellectual property

Except for openly licensed content and third-party material, the site and its contents — including text, design, graphics, the IAOIJ name and logo — are owned by or licensed to the IAOIJ and protected by intellectual-property laws. The IAOIJ name, logo and branding may not be used without our written permission, and nothing in these Terms grants you any right to do so.

5. Member & user conduct

You agree to use the site lawfully and not to: misuse or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the site, its systems or member data; scrape, harvest or bulk-download the member directory or personal data; impersonate any person or the IAOIJ; upload malicious code; or use the site to harass, endanger or defame others. Members additionally agree to uphold our Code of Ethics. We may suspend or terminate access for conduct that breaches these Terms or puts others at risk.

6. Third-party links

The site contains links to independent websites and resources that we do not control. We provide them for convenience and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or practices. Following an external link is at your own risk, and their terms and privacy policies apply.

7. No legal or financial advice

Information on this site — including material about whistleblowing, source protection and safety — is provided for general information only and is not legal, financial or professional advice. It may not fit your situation and should not be relied on as a substitute for advice from a qualified professional. For anything with legal consequences, consult a lawyer in your jurisdiction.

8. Disclaimers & limitation of liability

The site is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including as to accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. We work hard to be accurate but do not warrant that content is complete or up to date.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the IAOIJ and its officers, staff and members will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of — or inability to use — the site. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

9. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the IAOIJ and its officers, staff and members from any claims, losses or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your breach of these Terms or your misuse of the site.

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Switzerland. Any dispute relating to the site or these Terms is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Geneva, Switzerland, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have where you live.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the date above. Changes take effect when posted, and your continued use of the site means you accept them. Please check this page periodically.
